What to buy a 2 year old boy
It's often difficult to buy the best toys for a 2 year old boy if you don't have your own. I have a two year old son, he is now 2 3/4 and when he turned 2 , I was overwhelmed by people asking me what were good toys to buy him. I remember what it was like buying for kids before I had my own - I hadn't a clue. Therefore I have put together a list of the best toys for 2 year old boys based on all the top toys my son has played with at home, at toddler groups, at friends and relatives house. Hopefully you'll find some great suggestions of the best toys for a 2 year old boy.
Construction Toys
2 year old boys are just old enough to start playing with lego duplo. My son absolutely loves lego duplo and has played with it a lot since he was bought his first set at 22 months. It's been really good to teach him colours, improve fine motor skills, learn about construction and work on a project. There are lots of themed lego sets available too.
An alternative to lego duplo are megablocks. My son loves megablocks just as much. There are quite versatile too. We do things like playing toddler bowling by building up three towers with the megablocks and knocking them down with a soft ball.

Fun but educational
There are lots of great toys which are fun for 2 year old boys but educational too.
My son was given Mr Potato Head as a Christmas present at 22 months and it was great for teaching him the names of body parts and kept him occupied for quite a while. I would also highly recommend the leapfrog fridge magnets. My 2 year old would spend ages sticking magnets to the fridge while I was doing other things in the kitchen. These magnets are fantastic for teaching letters and about farm yard animals.
A bilbo is a strange plastic round shaped toy which I'm thinking of getting my son this Christmas. It's extremely durable, toddlers can spin on it, be pulled in it, fill it with stuff, fill in with dirt in the garden, take it in the bath, use it in the swimming pool, stand on it - the imagination is your limit.

Cars
2 year old boys will love cars, trucks and other vehicles. My son loves "driving" cars everywhere. He also loves diggers and will spend ages using them at the sandpit at the park. Fire engines are another popular toy - Fireman Sam toys are often a good choice. Remote contol cars are great too. My son also loves anything to do with Roary the Racing Car and Bob the Builder. Here are a few suggestions.
Drawing toys for 2 year old boys
My son loves to draw. He loves his magna doodle and so do I as it is a great toy, lots of opportunity to draw without making any mess. It makes a great travel toy too. Another great drawing toy is the Aquadoodle. 2 year old boys can fill up the water pen and draw over and over again without making any mess. You can't go wrong with buying some chunky crayons and other drawing equipment too.
Train Sets
I bought my son his 1st train set when he was 2 1/2 and he has played with it everyday since. We bought a wooden train set and there are lots of great wooden train sets, Brio is one of the lead brand names and has makes good quality train sets. There are also cheaper versions which do the job too. For a 2 year old you could start with a small train track and gradually add to it. Check out some options below.
Other good train sets for 2 year old boys include the Take Along Thomas collection of sets. There are different sets which can easily be packed up and transported to friend's houses, grandparents house or anywhere you need to play when out and about. Each take along set can combine with others to create a bigger train set.
The Step 2 Deluxe Canyon Road and rail table featured below allows young children to play with the trains and cars in one setting. The track is fixed so there's no problem with putting it together or the tracks falling apart while a toddler is playing with it. All play is on the table so there's no mess on the floor. When playtime is finished just throw all the cars and trains into the table for a quick clean up.

Play Doh
2 year olds love play doh - which is an inexpensive toy to keep them occupied for a while. You can also get different play doh sets with different shape cutters and moulds. Or why not check out the play doh flip n serve breakfast set, combine play doh with some imaginary play.
Outdoor Toys
Some of these outdoor toys can be used inside too if you have the space. My son used to love the little tikes car. There were three of these at a playgroup we went to and they were always taken. Slides are always great fun and they'll still be using them years later. The folding trampoline can be used indoors and outdoor and is great for burning off energy. Stomp rockets are great fun. 2 year old boys will love stomping down on the rocket to see how high they can shoot in the air. My son had one from when he was 2 1/2 and loved it. Also water tables are great for the Summer - 2 year olds will play for ages with a water table.
More of the best toys for 2 year old boys
If you'd still like a few more suggestions on the best toys for 2 year old boys - here they are. For Thomas the tank engine fans, Tomy do a good first train set featured below. At 2 years old my son loved pushing a shopping trolley around the house, picking up toys putting them in the trolley, wheeling them around and then taking them out again. Balls were another top favourite of my son's. He used to love playing kick the ball, rolling them, throwing them and trying to catch! He had about 8 balls when he was 2. He couldn't get enough of them. Or what about a first toy garage for a 2 year old boy.
DVDs
There are lots of great DVDs for this age group. Some of what my son has enjoyed included Peppa Pig, Brum, Wall-E and as he got older Toy Story. Check out some ideas below.
